Statement from Boyd ISD

Recent media coverage has suggested that the Boyd ISD Board of Trustees’ request to reassign a School Resource Officer was an act of retaliation related to an ongoing criminal investigation.

That characterization does not accurately reflect the Board’s stated reasons for its request.

On September 29, 2026, the Board requested the reassignment of an officer based on concerns involving campus coverage, communication, coordination with school administration, and compliance with the School Resource Officer Agreement between Boyd ISD and the City of Boyd.

The agreement establishes specific responsibilities for officers assigned to district campuses, including maintaining an active law-enforcement presence and coordinating with campus administration.

Specifically,

Section 2(E) One SRO shall be assigned to each school in the School District.

Section 3(A) SRO duty hours shall be 07:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for each day school is in session.

Section 5(A) To be a visible, active law enforcement figure on campus dealing with law enforcement matters and school code violations originating on the assigned campus.

Section 6(B) In the performance of their duties, SROs shall coordinate and communicate with the principal or the principal’s designee of the school to which they are assigned.

Section 5(J) It will be the responsibility of the SRO to report all crimes originating on campus. Information on cases that are worked off-campus bv the Police Department or other agencies involving students on a campus served bv an SRO will be provided to the SRO, but the SRO will not normally be actively involved in the off-campus investigation(s).

The Board in accordance with the agreement made their request base on:

Section 2(D)If the District Board of Trustees is dissatisfied with an SRO who has been assigned to any campus, then the board may request that the Police Lieutenant assign a different officer as the SRO for that school.

The city acknowledged this right in their response dated October 21st. In their response they have also acknowledged other areas that have not been followed while we disagree with their reasoning for some of the concerns.

The board’s dissatisfaction was communicated with the city based on the facts that the SRO on the campus has left the campus multiple times this year during the hours of 7:00a.m. and 4:00p.m. This was earlier communicated to the police department sergeant, and it appeared to be resolved. In the latest incident the SRO left the campus without communicating with the campus administration and without arranging for another officer to cover the campus.

The Board has communicated all of these concerns to the City in writing and has requested clarification regarding compliance with the agreement. The most serious concern was with a previously documented concern that the SRO has left campus during the duty hours on multiple occasions and in the latest incident did not provide notification to the campus administration that there would not be an officer on campus, therefore the request for reassignment was made to the city based on a lack of trust in him serving in this role. The City has advised that it identified no violations. The Board respectfully disagrees with that determination and continues to seek an appropriate resolution.

The Board’s request was not made to interfere with, obstruct, or retaliate against any criminal investigation or police officer. Boyd ISD supports lawful investigations and expects all individuals involved to be treated fairly and in accordance with applicable law.

The Board’s responsibility is to protect the safety, welfare, and rights of every student entrusted to our district. That responsibility includes ensuring that officers assigned to our schools operate within the terms of the agreement governing their presence. The Board’s commitment to this responsibility is clearly evident in their decision to enter into the agreement with the city at a higher budgetary cost than other options that are available,

This matter concerns the district’s expectations under an established agreement and its responsibility to maintain an effective working relationship between law enforcement and campus administration. It should not be mischaracterized as opposition to a criminal investigation.

We remain committed to working cooperatively with the City of Boyd to maintain an effective School Resource Officer program that serves the best interests of our students, staff, and community.
